Should Your Kids Be Training?

When it comes to youth athletes (and non-athletes), strength training offers benefits that go beyond sport performance; it lays a foundation for healthy movement and gym confidence that lasts a lifetime.

While some parents might worry about the risks of injury, the truth is that well-coached, age-appropriate (which alludes to customizing programs to the experience level, not just chronological age) strength training is safer than most people think.

Kids naturally sprint, jump, climb, and play hard every day—structured training is just a safer, more intentional version of what they already do.

One of the biggest advantages of introducing strength training to youth athletes is the comfort and familiarity it builds with the gym.

By learning proper form and getting hands-on experience early, these young athletes develop knowledge and confidence that will serve them well into high school, college, and adulthood.

Having that confidence eliminates a major barrierthat many adults face when stepping into a gym for the first time.

Strength training also directly benefits sports performance (obviously).

As kids build strength and improve coordination, they build resilience in their tissues and are better equipped to handle the demands of their sports.

Movements like squats, deadlifts, and presses help to teach balance and body control, which can reduce injury risks on the field by preparing them for the quick, varied movements required in athletics.

Beyond performance, strength training gives kids exposure to a variety of movements, preventing early burnout or overuse injuries that can result from specializing in one sport too soon.

The variety helps them become better-rounded athletes while supporting overall health and longevity in sports and beyond.

Structured strength training for youth athletes isn’t something to fear—it’s a tool to empower kids.

They’re already running, jumping, and climbing for fun, so giving them structured opportunities to develop those abilities just makes sense.

And with the right guidance, strength training is safe, effective, and builds a foundation for both athletic success and lifelong fitness.
