Assess; Don’t Guess

Assessment in training is often treated like a formality, a quick screen before the exercise begins.

But good assessment isn’t just a checklist. The goal isn’t to prove how much we know as coaches.

It’s to understand enough that our programming and coaching decisions can be thoughtful, not thoughtless or random.

It’s better to have information you don’t need than to need information you don’t have.

In training, the cost of missing information rarely pops up in a single session, but over months it can totally reshape our outcomes.

Good assessment also reminds us that people can be more complicated (both physically and emotionally) than they appear. And while the weights don’t care about those details, coaches do.

Assessment is all about gathering as much information as possible in order to make the best training decisions that we can.

Assessment isn’t just a movement screen or some sort of mobility test. It’s how somebody warms up, the way they hesitate before starting a set, or the way they describe how something felt. Numbers matter a lot, but context matters just as much.

In that regard, assessment widens our perspective and helps us gain clarity.

Assessment never really ends. Every day, every set, every new exercise becomes part of an ongoing conversation and gets stored somewhere in our mental member profile.

The longer someone stays, the more information we have and the more precise we can be in delivering exactly what somebody needs.

And precision equals efficiency. Assessment helps us move you forward toward your goals faster and more certainly.
