Weight Loss Drugs & Muscle

GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic have seen a meteoric rise in popularity due to their dramatic impact on weight loss.

Originally developed to manage type 2 diabetes, these drugs work by slowing digestion, reducing appetite, and improving insulin sensitivity.

And questions about these drugs are some of the most common ones that we hear in the gym, so let’s tackle a few in broad strokes.

While many folks see rapid drops in body weight, it’s important to understand the benefits and the tradeoffs—especially when it comes to muscle retention and long-term health.

Many of the short-term side effects—nausea, fatigue, dizziness—can be traced back to a massive reduction in calorie intake.

People simply aren’t eating enough.

It’s entirely possible to create a diet that mimics the effects of these drugs, it’s just much more difficult.

A diet that dropped your calorie intake as efficiently as a GLP-1 would probably have similar effects.

And while this steep calorie deficit results in quick fat loss, it can also lead to dehydration, poor energy levels, and, crucially, muscle loss.

That’s where strength training comes in.

The weight you lose isn’t just body fat—it can include a surprising amount of lean tissue if you’re not strength training.

(And the faster you drop weight, the more muscle mass you’ll lose, likely.)

Maintaining muscle while losing fat is what preserves your metabolism, protects your joints, and makes everyday life easier.

In the long term, sustained muscle loss can mean a lower resting metabolic rate, increased risk of injury, and a harder time keeping the weight off once the medication stops.

That’s why pairing GLP-1 medications with a strength training program—and ideally some form of protein guidance, but that’s for another email—is essential.

So whether you’re using a GLP-1 or not, the goal should always be to lose weight in a way that supports your long-term health.

Strength training isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s the closest thing we have to an insurance policy against the unintended side effects of extreme calorie deficits.

It’s how you make sure the weight you lose is the right kind.
