Biohacking 101

As we approach the year 2025 I for sure thought by now we’d have flying cars. Or lightsabers. Yes, definitely that one.

But no, alas, all we have are a procession of (mostly) tech CEOS and social media influencers alleging that their special morning routine is somehow the key to youth and longevity.

LOL

Biohacking is, quite simply, the trendy pursuit of optimizing your body through a cocktail of tech, supplements, and DIY science (emphasis on the word trendy).

It’s really at the heart of of pop-science, pop-health, and pop-fitness.

While it sounds like the stuff of movies, in reality, it’s mostly a lot of effort for things that normal habits could’ve solved.

Why simply stop watching TikTok at night when you can optimize your sleep by wearing $300 blue-light-blocking glasses and tracking your REM cycles like you’re training for the Matrix?

Let’s talk about cryotherapy – stepping into a -200°F chamber for a few minutes.

This is supposed to reduce inflammation and boost recovery.

Sounds cool (pun intended), but so does taking a shower and going for a walk.

Plus, inflammation is an important part of the recovery process and deliberately reducing all inflammation from your body is directly interfering with your body’s natural adaptation mechanism.

At least when you go for a walk, you don’t risk hypothermia (usually).

Or how about bulletproof coffee?

Biohackers swear by blending butter and MCT oil into their morning brew to trigger fat burning.

Spoiler alert: your body burns fat basically all the time naturally, no trigger necessary.

But I do understand, slurping down an oily latte looks much cooler.

The supplement industry is wild too.

Ever heard of nootropics? These smart drugs will turbo-charge your brain.

Just ask Joe Rogan. (But don’t ask who paid him to tell you.)

Realistically, you’ll just get a jittery stomach and an inability to focus.

(By the way, drinking more water and cutting back on doomscrolling both have similar cognitive benefits.)

The truth is, most biohacks are just high-effort, expensive ways to fix problems that have existed since forever.

Sleep more, eat well, move often, and spend time doing things you enjoy.

Sure, it’s not as sexy as injecting yourself with peptides, but at least you won’t waste your Saturday setting up an infrared sauna in your living room.
